Advertisement for replacements for wealthy soldiers called up to fight in the Civil War. Substituting was used when a wealthy person was drafted, and they could afford to pay someone to take their place in the military. The advertisement particularly requested fifty African American substitutes, as well as 200 white substitutes, from the Camden area in South Jersey. Many African Americans and poor whites entered military service in this way.
