William Johnson and Alfred Martin were two African Americans from Middlesex County, New Jersey, who fought for the Union Army during the Civil War. These two documents are contracts certifying both of them into the Union Army. These two new soldiers were mustered into service, entering as E-1 Privates as their Ranks. Alfred Martin was a part of Delta Company for the One Hundred and Twenty-Seventh Regiment U.S. Colored Troops. William Johnson belonged to Alpha Company for the Forty-First Regiment U.S. Colored Troops. It is significant to realize that while both these men were able to go to war as African Americans, both were put into their very own colored Regiments where they would only be alongside other African Americans. Later on the United States Military would become more diverse and allow the men and women who serve our country to fight by one another, no matter skin color or race.
